Virtual technology has been in play within the whisky world since long before the coronavirus pandemic swept the planet. SMWS social media guru Mads Schmoll reports on what bold new frontiers are left to explore and what lasting changes we can expect to see from our online whisky existence.
Whisky may be a drink steeped in history and tradition. But thank goodness for having the technology at hand to be able to share it during times of social distancing, says SMWS spirits manager Euan Campbell, with his selection from August’s Outturn.

AND LEMON GROVES
PROFILE Light & Delicate REGION Speyside AGE 30 Years ABV 43.2% CASK TYPE Refill ex-bourbon barrel
On the nose; summer flower meadows and lemon groves – you can almost feel the balmy air and hear the bees. Also, pineapple, Charentais melon and highly polished furniture. The palate is fruity and floral; quince jelly, jasmine, elderflower, orange blossom and fresh pineapple dusted with chilli and salt.
The reduced nose is wonderfully gentle, subtle and attractive; acacia honey, toffee apples and vanilla ice-cream with lychees. The palate is so delicate now (it needs only a drop of water) – soft citric flavours, white grapes, Fruit Salad chews and fruit cocktail – just a sliver of oak in the tail. Refreshing and summery.
Small batch single malt
PROFILE Small batch single malt REGION Scotland AGE 8 Years ABV 50.0% CASK TYPE Refill Gascon black oak ex-armagnac barrels
In the creation of this small batch single malt, we made use of some armagnac barrels fashioned from Gascon black oak to further develop the fruity flavours of the whisky and add a French oak counterpoint to the American oak influence of first-fill bourbon barrels. The result is an estery, sweet and spicy concoction.
Hugely hospitable aromas embraced oaky and toasty notes before a wave of sweetness delivered white chocolate on sponge cake. The soft fruits of apricots, banana and ripe pears mingled with heartwarming spice as pink peppercorns arrived. On the palate, we found crumbled walnuts and chocolate-covered Brazil nuts along with croissants and apple strudel. With water came an aromatic deluge of fragrant pears, orange blossom and apple orchards framed by chamomile tea.
Cask No. 135.23
A SHAPE-SHIFTING CHIMERA
PROFILE Spicy & Sweet REGION Highland AGE 10 Years ABV 60.8% CASK TYPE 1st fill ex-bourbon barrel
A shape-shifting chimera – the nose evoked an old fashioned confectioner’s; butterscotch, Turkish delight, vanilla, orange fondants, lemon drizzle cake and Demerara – also hints of flower meadows, white pepper, lino cuts and a carpenter’s workshop. The palate had sweetness (cinder toffee, sherbet straws, candy peanuts, cola cubes, Old English spangles) complicated by warm pepper tingles, liquorice, green banana and honeysuckle.
Adding water brought citrus to the nose, then toffee apples, marzipan, almond slice and rosewater – the linocuts became Barbour jackets. On the palate; jam pop tarts, nougat, cinnamon swirls, Oreos and chocolate ice-cream – some Drambuie notes and woody spice to finish.
