All you need to explore whiskies across the spectrum is an open mind and a suitable guide. That is the Society’s goal, not only to offer you a huge variety and showcase whisky in all its multifaceted glory but to help you navigate everything we have to offer. If you’re ready to explore new flavours and unusual offerings, you’re in safe hands, says SMWS spirits manager Euan Campbell.

Cask No. 46.105

FEEL THE PEEL

£45.60

PROFILE Juicy, Oak & Vanilla REGION Speyside AGE 8 Years ABV 64.1% CASK TYPE 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrel

A soft sweetness evoked memories of frosted cupcakes and pears dusted with demerara sugar before a tart fruitiness delivered bananas with blood orange marmalade and red apple peel. On the palate, we discovered candied apples and lemon cream with the fragrant spice of cinnamon before creamy vanilla led us to soft watermelon and a zing of grapefruit pith.

Then with water, we found a sweet amalgamation of lemon curd, Battenberg cake and strawberry laces with raisins and the soft fruit of pears and guava with elderflower cordial. Spicy notes now became more forward on the palate as mace and cloves joined cumin and orange peel. Citrus oils merged with banana as we concluded with a large helping of golden syrup in Earl Grey tea.

CHILLED CHILLI CORIANDER COCKTAIL

£56.00

PROFILE Young & Spritely REGION Highland AGE 9 Years ABV 59.0% CASK TYPE 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrel

Smiling faces all around as it was the first day of the new season, a return to the golf course after a long and dreadful hibernation over the winter period. On the palate the spicy chilled heat of a chilli and coriander cocktail – gin, tonic, chopped slices of green chilli and fresh coriander leaves.

Inevitably rain arrived by the 4th hole and we had to unfold our premium fibreglass umbrellas and put on our brand-new waterproof jackets. Thankfully the shower was short-lived, and we finished the round in glorious sunshine with some enjoying frangipane tart with custard on the 19th hole while others had a New York cheesecake.
