FRESH-AIR FLAVOUR PROFILES
How can outdoor activities heighten our appreciation of whisky? We tackle everything from a gentle stroll to throwing yourself off a cliff in a wingsuit (saving the whiskies until afterwards of course). Here are 12 different takes on how to combine your favourite fresh-air pursuit with a Society dram.
GEAR UP TO GO WILD
Ready to embrace the great outdoors with a cask strength bottle in your backpack or hip flask? We’ve got you covered whether you’re exploring a stretch of coastline, sitting by the campfire or simply sitting in the garden.
WELCOME BACK TO THE VAULTS
We can’t contain our excitement any longer!
From Tuesday 27th April, you can also enjoy the outdoors at The Vaults as we reopen our doors to members. We’re currently working on a new, exciting (and weatherproof) outdoor space which will allow us to share some socially distanced drams, while the main Members’ Room will be available to enjoy food, soft drinks and hot beverages. Our booking system is now open for you to plan your first visit back and of course, we’ll be following all the Government advice and guidelines to keep our members and staff safe.
HIP FLASK FAVOURITES
With the clocks going forward and spring in the air, it’s time to think about getting outdoors – and what whisky to take with you on any trip. SMWS spirits manager Euan Campbell has a suitable suggestion for your hip flask, whatever your plans involve.
Cask No. 26.166
PROFILE Lightly Peated REGION Highland AGE 9 Years ABV 59.3% CASK TYPE 1st fill ex-bourbon barrel
Intriguing aromas of Fisherman’s Friends, hessian, kelp and suspicions of peat smoke. Also runny honey and fruits in custard. Yes – the palate confirmed it – floral, heathery peat and cough mixture; but lemon sherbet and gooseberry jam lifted it above the bass clef. The reduced nose seemed very old school and had us imagining Blair Witch twig sculptures around a highland bothy – also atmospheric hints of sea-spray and smoking hay – was there something of the Wicker Man here? The palate now found characteristic waxed fruits, chalky seashells, cinnamon sugar, polished wood and again that tantalising wisp of smoke.
Cask No. 7.255
PROFILE Juicy, Oak & Vanilla REGION Speyside AGE 16 Years ABV 56.8% CASK TYPE 1st fill ex-bourbon barrel
We found this one immediately classical and enticing with everything you'd expect from this great make: white fruit jams, stone fruits, lychee, kumquat, melon, papaya and Juicy Fruit chewing gum. A punchy scent of cask char, honeycomb and star anise evolving towards waxes and light medicines. Reduction brought dried heather, cereals, sunflower oils, pollens, starchy linen and earthy potting sheds. The palate showed an immediate and nourishing spiciness. Then Madeira cake, mineral oil, sweet waxiness and heather honey. Reduction ushered the fruits back in and gave us fruit salad juices, ripe mango, pineapple syrup and exotic fruit chutneys. A wee pink wafer biscuit to send us on our way.
